Best Ever:iPhone 14 Models Feature All-day Battery Life

2022-09-15

At the 'Far Out' event, Apple has just announced the iPhone 14 series on stage. As we suspected, this year we will not only get the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, but also a new member of the iPhone 14 Plus family (the last iPhone with "Plus" in its name was the iPhone 8 Plus).

Last week, when the iPhone 14 was announced, Apple claimed that the iPhone 14 would have an improved battery life across the board compared to the iPhone 13. Now we have more details about the battery inside each iPhone 14 model, including the iPhone 14 Plus, which Apple says has "the best iPhone battery life ever".

There's no doubt that battery life is one of the key pillars in making a good phone. Last year, Apple set the bar higher than ever with the launch of the battery life champion iPhone 13 series. However, the iPhone 14 Series exceeded even that!

iPhone 14 Have Better Battery Capacity
Historically, Apple has not had a good track record when it comes to device battery life, as its devices such as the iPhone, iPad and especially the Apple Watch need to be charged more frequently than some of its competitors.

According to the 'Far Out' event, Apple has raised battery life expectations for the new iPhones, although the change in capacity itself is negligible (battery life expectations for the Pro Max have also been revised downwards).
Battery capacities for the iPhone 13 series:
iPhone 13 mini: 2,406 mAh
iPhone 13: 3,227 mAh
iPhone 13 Pro: 3,095 mAh
iPhone 13 Pro Max: 4,352 mAh

Battery capacities for the iPhone 14 series:
iPhone 14: 3,279 mAh
iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325 mAh
iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200 mAh
iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323 mAh

Three out of four iPhone 14 models have a larger battery capacity than the iPhone 13 series, except for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which has a slightly smaller battery capacity than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

As you can see, these differences can end up being rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things, at least when it comes to the size of the battery.

Battery Life:iPhone 14 Series VS iPhone 13 Series
According to the technical specifications on Apple's website, the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have an hour longer offline video playback life than the equivalent iPhone 13, while the iPhone 14 Plus has no directly comparable model.

This suggests that, in addition to the actual capacity, it relies on two key factors for better battery life: the software and the chipset.

Optimisation of the software - in this case, iOS 16 - the chipset - the A15 Bionic in Apple's standard and Plus models, the Pro and Pro Max's A16 Bionic - can provide additional power to the phone.

The battery life of the iPhone is influenced by two main factors: the size of the battery life and the efficiency of the processor inside the iPhone. This year, the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have switched to the new A16 Bionic process, which uses a new 4nm manufacturing process. iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus use the 5nm A15 Bionic, which is still incredibly efficient, but not as efficient as the A16 Bionic.

According to Apple, the iPhone 14 Plus has the longest battery life of any iPhone due to its 6.7-inch screen size and lack of features in some Pro models. However, this is not entirely true as Apple's technical specifications suggest that the iPhone 14 Pro Max still has the longest battery life for video playback, possibly due to the ProMotion display's ability to reduce the refresh rate to reduce power consumption. For example, the longer battery life on the Pro Max when it comes to video play back is simply thanks to ProMotion because it can drop down to 24 or 30fps while watching video.

Simplifying the manufacturing process used for chip manufacturing usually increases efficiency. This obviously offsets the fact that the battery in the iPhone 14 Pro Max is insignificantly smaller than the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

By raising battery expectations for the new phones, Apple is sending a message that it has confidence in the chipsets and software to carry the torch in areas where the battery hasn't increased.

Last week, Apple announced all four iPhone 14 models and began taking pre-orders starting on 9 September. The devices will go on sale on 16 September, except for the iPhone 14 Plus, which will go on sale from 7 October. Have you pre-ordered one yet?
