How to Replace a Broken Cell Phone Screen Display

As cell phone displays become tougher than ever, they seem indestructible. Unfortunately, they're not. Dropping your phone to the ground often damages the display. Your phone is no longer considered useful. Want to replace a damaged smartphone display? It's a relatively inexpensive and easy process.Here's how to DIY replace a damaged phone screen display.

Consider the non-monetary costs: time without a phone, data that needs to be archived from the device, and the many online and local services that will fix your cell phone for a fee. Fitting a new display that costs the same as a replacement phone is pointless.It doesn't make sense to install a new display for the same price as a replacement phone. But if you have access to the parts, and they are cheap, why not do it yourself?

Steps of Replacing a Phone Screen
There are too many different phone models on the market to provide a standardized guide. In addition, there are some models that cannot be repaired without sending them back to the manufacturer.

Most smartphones are essentially made up of several layers of components. Each layer must be carefully disassembled in order to replace the glass display.Below are the guidelines for replacing your smartphone display.

Step 1: Open the phone
First, remove (if possible) the back cover and battery to find out where Torx (or standard) screws may be hidden. Look under the label and next to the USB port. If your device has a removable battery, you may find screws in the battery chamber.

Take the phone apart with levers and picks; Other screws also need to be removed.

Pay attention to ribbon cables, they need to be carefully disconnected from the connector. Use a flat plastic blade or paddle to do so.Data is usually passed through different hardware layers inside the phone. Ribbon cables are delicate; easily damaged, note that these damages can significantly alter the dynamics of the repair.

Step 2: Remove the Screen
By now, you should have the front of the phone in your hand, empty, with the glass display ready to be removed. Use a heat gun or place the phone in a warm place (like on a radiator) for a while to soften the adhesive.Pushing through the camera hole against the glass to begin with,slowly pulling the glass display away from the body.

In this case, you don't need to remove the display, but you will need to remove components (even the motherboard) from the damaged device into the new body.

Step 3: Replace the Adhesive
Narrow rolls of replacement adhesive can be purchased online. Is there double-sided tape around it? Cut it into narrow strips of 1mm length and apply the adhesive to the phone bezel instead of the glass.

Step 4: Install the New Screen
Once the adhesive is in place, remove the protective strip from the adhesive and push the glass into place.
Apply light pressure to the display where it will come in contact with the adhesive. Be careful not to put pressure in the middle of the glass display.

Step 5: Ensure Correct Cable Connections
Reconnect the relevant cables, locking them where needed. Carefully put the parts back in the case and make sure no cables or screws are missing. Test the phone to check that it is working properly.Switch on the phone without securing the final screws to check functionality.

Remember that touch screen displays serve two purposes: touch interaction and displaying the phone's operating system.A successful replacement will give your phone a new "almost new" look, and if the touch screen works well, that's great.
